What it is

An operator card scheme for named categories of plant and machinery. There are two kinds of card: an NPORS card carrying the CSCS logo, for construction, and a Traditional NPORS card without the CSCS logo, for industries that don't ask for one.

Who needs it

NPORS says operators in construction should take the NPORS/CSCS route, since most construction sites require cards with the CSCS logo. The Traditional card is for sectors outside construction that don't have that requirement.

How long it lasts

  • NPORS/CSCS Trained Operator (red): two years, while the operator works towards an NVQ or SVQ. It can be extended once by 12 months if they're registered for one.
  • NPORS/CSCS Competent Operator (blue): five years, with a logbook to record operating hours and CPD.
  • Traditional card: three or five years, chosen when it's registered.
  • Both CSCS-logo cards need an NPORS or CITB HS&E test passed within the two years before applying.

Moving from red to blue, and renewing

To upgrade, hold a current red card (or one expired within the last 12 months), an HS&E test from the last two years, and the NVQ or SVQ for the categories. A blue card is then issued for five years.

If the NVQ still isn't done by the end of the 12-month extension, NPORS won't issue another red card. Blue card holders are expected to keep up CPD in their logbook, and NPORS sets out the renewal details in its operator portal.
